Lossiemouth West Beach is a stunning 3 mile stretch of sand, running past Covesea Lighthouse on the Moray Firth coast. Staying at Silver Sands Holiday Park, we were right next door to the lighthouse and had direct access from the site to the beach. A few weeks before our visit, there had been a wildfire in the grassland by the lighthouse and still a burnt toast sort of smell lingered along the path, yet among the charred gorse new shoots were already managing to push their way through.
We certainly made the most of our beach-side location, although as we had so many other activities to pack into the week, we only managed evening strolls. And when I say we ‘strolled’, what I really mean is we were blown along! Being April, it was very cold and windy on the coast, but did that bother the kids? Of course not! They explored caves, clambered on the rocks, found rock pools, looked out for jets from RAF Lossiemouth overhead and enjoyed running around in the vast open space with not a single person in sight. I imagine in the warmer summer months this beach must be much more popular and it would be lovely to return sometime (when it’s a bit less breezy!)
