Images taken at Highland Wildlife Park. April 2017.
As annual members of our local Marwell Zoo in Hampshire, we can gain free entry to a number of other UK zoos for one visit per year. Included in those is the Highland Wildlife Park, so we took the opportunity to visit on our recent trip to Scotland. It was great to see a range of different animals we hadn’t encountered at other zoos, such as polar bears and super-cute arctic foxes. It was interesting to learn that the wildlife park devotes more space to polar bears than any other zoo in the world and the enclosure for the female polar bear looks particularly spacious and includes a pond, plus some trees she seems to enjoy having a bit of a scratch on as you can see in the photo! It was also lovely to hear that one of the park’s snow leopards, Animesh, was born at Marwell and we’d previously seen her there as a cub. Being within the Cairngorms National Park, the land is naturally rugged and hilly, creating interesting enclosures for the animals to explore. There were also some great viewpoints around the park, to take in the amazing sights of the snowy peaks in the distance.
