Based in Hampshire, The Princess and The Pickle create earth-friendly greeting cards, featuring original photography-based designs.

About The Princess and The Pickle

The Princess and The Pickle began in 2011 as an online journal, full of snapshots and memories of family adventures. It soon developed into my own little creative space with a focus on photography and in late 2018 my online greeting cards shop was born.

My cards are designed to be a little kinder to our planet than some of the mass-produced cards you’ll find on the high street. As an eco-conscious greetings card retailer I want to ensure my products are made in a responsible way, reducing their environmental impact. Read more about my policies below.

The minimal-waste greeting cards I produce are perfect if you want to send a thoughtful message to a loved one while being a little kinder to the environment.

While some people prefer to send a text or an e-card, there’s nothing quite like sending a handwritten note card on a special occasion or to let a loved one know you’re thinking of them. A handwritten envelope arriving on someone’s doormat (amongst all the bills and the junk mail!) can really brighten that person’s day. I hope the cards I create will be cherished, not thrown away. The cards are fully recyclable, but it’s always better to reuse where possible. These artistic greeting cards are designed to create lasting memories and are perfect for popping in a square picture frame.

A more earth-friendly alternative to mass-produced greeting cards, The Princess and The Pickle’s cards are:

  • Made with 100% recycled paper from post-consumer waste. No trees are harmed in the making of my cards!
  • Designed and printed in Hampshire, UK, with materials sourced from within the UK and as locally as possible, reducing my carbon footprint.
  • Plastic free. Hurray!
  • Designed with original photography-based artwork and intended to be cherished, not thrown away. However, they are of course recyclable.
  • Blank inside for your own message, making them perfect to personalise for any occasion.

I have a low-waste policy and any off-cuts of card are saved and used to make biodegradable wildflower-seeded or naturally scented confetti which you can sprinkle inside the cards as an added gift for the recipient. Any scraps left unused manage to find their way into the kids’ craft drawers where they are certain to be put to good use!

The packaging I use to display my cards at craft fairs and markets are biofilm presentation sleeves, made with vegetable starch derived from renewable crops. These are completely plastic-free and are fully biodegradable and compostable, but are stable enough to protect my cards from the elements while trading in all weather and prevent the cards from any damage.

Online greeting card orders are sent ‘naked’ to reduce waste further, with no presentation bag, just good old fashioned paper/card-backed protective packaging.

My note card sets are packed in a gift box made from a single A4 sheet of recycled card.

All printing is currently done ‘in-house’ (literally!) and I participate in an ink cartridge recycling programme. I use a high-yield single colour ink system, for optimum usage out of each cartridge and my ink supplier reuses or recycles every part of the cartridge, meaning no part of it goes to landfill.

Recycling greeting cards

Many people still love to send cards for birthdays, Christmas, other special occasions, or just as a note to say hello – and it’s lovely to receive a card in the post too, but please choose greeting cards responsibly! The Princess and The Pickle greeting cards can easily be recycled or reused by their recipients.

All of the cards I create are uncoated, with no glitter, foil or embellishments, so can all be recycled. Alternatively, as the cards are artistic reproductions from original photography, they also make nice framed prints and fit perfectly in a 6×6″ square frame. It’s always better to try and reuse before you recycle!

Greeting card campaigns

The Princess and The Pickle is proud to support the #JustACard campaign and the #NakedCards campaign.

The Just A Card campaign promotes shopping locally and shopping small, encouraging people to buy from designer/makers and independent galleries and shops, even if that purchase is ‘just a card’ – each and every sale is important to a small business.

Naked Cards is a campaign to encourage online card shops to go plastic-free and sell their cards either ‘naked’ or in paper packaging. While this isn’t always practical (I do still use biofilm plant-based presentation sleeves to protect my cards from the elements while trading at craft fairs and markets), I am committed to producing as little waste as possible and will post all online greeting card orders without biofilm sleeves – unless requested by the customer.

The Princess and The Pickle’s recycled organic cotton clothing range is made in partnership with Teemill – a company that is committed to sustainable style through organic farming, low waste and renewable energy.

The t-shirts are made from 50% certified organic cotton with 50% post-consumer remanufactured organic cotton. They are printed in the UK in a renewable energy-powered factory, then shipped directly to you in plastic-free packaging. The clothing is printed on demand, rather than having large amounts in stock, so there is no waste inventory.

Due to the natural materials, the products can be returned to Teemill and recycled again and again when they’re worn out, making the production cycle itself renewable. This is known as circular fashion, which, along with charity shopping and upcycling, is a way we can help to reduce the amount of clothing which ends up in landfill.

My vibrant range of recycled t-shirt designs caught the attention of Theo Paphitis and I’m super proud to say The Princess and The Pickle became one of Theo’s Small Business Sunday winners for 2019.

As well as being able to buy my products online, you’ll also find me at lots of local craft fairs and markets throughout the year. I am open to supplying my products to independent gift shops, please get in touch if you would like to discuss wholesale options or commission bespoke designs.
